BACKGROUND NOTE

 

Launched in 2011, Snapchat, originally called Picaboo, was a messaging and social media app that allowed users to send pictures that almost instantly disappeared to each other. It began humbly as a class project by former Stanford University students Reggie Brown (Brown), Robert Murphy (Murphy), and Evan Spiegel (Spiegel). Brown later left (and sued) the company ; Murphy became Chief Technology Officer (CTO); and Spiegel took charge as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). In 2012, Picaboo was renamed as Snapchat when the app was rebranded and added to the Google Play for Android users. In September 2016, the company was officially renamed from Snapchat to Snap with the introduction of its first hardware gadget...
